Migrating an intranet from Kentico to Drupal: architecture and content model

Diagram of the Hradec Králové Region intranet migrating from Kentico to Drupal 10, with the Sections taxonomy and the Page, Article, and Wiki content types

The Hradec Králové Region Civil Servant Portal is a complete replacement for the previous intranet, which ran on Kentico (Windows / ASP.NET). The goal was not a straight one-to-one migration but a modern, sustainable architecture built on Drupal 10.

Separating structure from content

The key decision was to separate the information structure from the content itself. The site hierarchy is defined by a “Sections” taxonomy tree, which also generates the navigation, the breadcrumb trail, and the sitemap.

Content model: pages, articles, wiki

The content model is built on three main content types: Page, Article, and Wiki article. Wiki articles reference a parent page, which makes it possible to build a tree of how-to guides.

Modular content with Paragraphs

The Paragraphs system lets editors assemble content from modular components: text, article listings, document listings, attachments, and media. That allows a great deal of flexibility without any changes to the templates.

Documents as standalone media

Documents are implemented as standalone media items with their own metadata and bulk upload. They can therefore be reused across the whole intranet.

Layered access control

Access control works in layers: global roles combined with permissions defined at the section level.

The result is an intranet platform that gives the office a structured tool for managing its documents and knowledge.
